Jally is a 74th generation Griot (or Jali), Gambia’s hereditary musical class. He resides and works in the UK but is deeply invested in the music of his heritage. His reputation is as an ‘Afro-futurist musician who expands the boundaries of Gambian musical traditions by combining traditional West African sounds with hard funk, jazz and rock’. And now, with strings, folk and electronica as well!

“Global Griot”, recorded as a covid-restricted intercontinental collaboration, has a soulful resonance despite geography, or tradition, and is a deep conversation between cultures, musical styles, and histories.

Says Nic: “World music is a partnership of technical, cultural and musical excellence – the genre itself involves combining different levels of expertise into a co-creation. It’s extremely rewarding to know that I’ve journeyed with a master and worked alongside him to nurture the resonance between us – combining our strengths into a co-creation.”

And Jally: “My storyboard includes many different storylines, but they are all interconnected. The freedom to travel and be exposed to world cultures gave me the knowledge and understanding of how different genres are all intertwined and feed each other. At the end of the day, I am a musician – and music contains everything”.
