For the past 4 years, I have been shaping a musical composition in the context of a journey of discovery with a widening circle of friends both local and international.
Based on the great Persian poet Jalal ad-Din Rumi’s timeless poem “One Song”, “The One” is a song cycle for strings, choir and an array of world instrumentation. It explores the drama of the soul’s heroic journey, with its deep and often faultering struggle towards Unity.
Cape Town, where I live, is a world in a city, with parallel African, European, and Asian heritages. While it is still striving and struggling to recover from Apartheid’s pernicious legacy, it also serves as a model for inter cultural harmony, thought local and international organisations and communities.
I draw on many of these in the video of the finale, “The One”.
