I have just completed an excellent month long course on the FutureLearn MOOC platform, entitled “Copyright And The Business Of Creative Industries“.

Designed by CISAC (International Confederation Of Societies Of Authors And Composers) and Brazilian Professor Marisa Gandelman, and introduced below by Angélique Kidjo (CISAC Vice President) the content covered all sectors and “repertoires” of what we would call Creative Industries.

Answers to a wide variety of questions that have long eluded me came into focus, and I have a new perspective on the structures of my own industry, music (especially for media). But the course goes into all “repertoires”: Music, Audiovisual, Dramatic, Visual Arts and Literature, and “sectors” (Advertising, Architecture, Books, Gaming, Music, Movies, Newspapers and magazines, Performing Arts, Radio, TV, and Visual arts).

It clarifies the “economics of copyright”, ownership of ideas, assignment of those ideas, and the flow of royalties resulting from exploiting them.
